Learning Cartoon Illustration
Sep 20
One of my goals for this year was to start learning cartoon illustration, and this weekend I decided to take the first step towards that endeavor.
I really didn’t know where to start, so I started with a Internet search. After reading up on some suggestions and looking at examples, I decided to give it a try.
After a few really bad attempts, I drew the following without using a pencil sketch. (I was sitting with my kids, and we only had Crayola markers.)
Then, I did something I never thought I’d ever do. I drove to Best Buy and purchased a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch Pad.
Oh, yeah. I think I’m going to like this new toy.

Too funny! I love how your computer sketches seem better than your Crayola marker ones.
That is totally awesome! What a neat concept… I have never seen something like that before… Is this how animation is done now as well? Interesting concept!
Yeah, I’m able to create images that exist as line art, rather than just pixels, when I draw it on the computer, and that opens up a lot more flexibility and scalability. Now, I just need a lot of practice.
Honestly, Victoria, I have no idea. I imagine there are similarities with animation, and it seems that getting the drawings in a digital and editable format like this would be the first step in that process.

On another note, I’m curious as to why you chose this as a goal for the year?
