Good Knight!?

Aug 11, 2008

Keri showed me this thoughtful review of the new Batman movie the other day, and I thought it was very interesting and worthwhile.  It certainly gives some insight to our nation’s wreckless consumption of media, and it will probably make some of you mad.

Too Good to Be True?

Aug 09, 2008

Sometimes you come across something that seems too good to be true, and I’ve had that experience this weekend.  We discovered a small new public water park at one of the parks where I often play disc golf (when I have time to play disc golf, that is).  Now, I’m not talking slides or anything like that, but what they’ve got is perfect for Brynna on a hot summer day, and it’s free.

We went there today, and I expected it to be packed out with kids because of the weekend and the heat, but there was only one other family there.  Woohoo!

Small Group

Aug 09, 2008

Special thanks to Wendy & Jari Mema for putting on a great mystery meal at small group this past Sunday.  They had each adult in the group order four courses of food by guessing at cryptic Bible references.  What resulted were weird combinations (such as beans and dessert salad) and sometimes having to eat food with either the wrong or no silverware.

It was a lot of fun!  Thanks, guys!

This is the video slideshow I put together for our final service meeting as the West Campus.

GPS Treasure Hunt

I found this article to be very interesting. Kind of makes me want to get a GPS (Yes, Phil, I am a bit jealous of your new iPhone).

Playing with Legos Again

Jul 27, 2008

Growing up, there were few toys that I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Legos.  I’ve been waiting for the day when Bryn and I could play with them together.

On our trip to Lubbock, Dad was kind enough to crawl around in the attic looking for my old Legos for the Boo and I to play with. He didn’t find the Legos, but he did find some Duplo blocks, and here’s one of the Boo’s first creations.

Isn’t she brilliant?

Emotional Week

Jul 26, 2008

This has been a very emotional week. On the way to church in the morning, I got a call from my dad, letting me know that Grandmomma (my mom’s mother) had a massive heart attack and a stroke. So on top of the gut-wrenching heaviness of working through what’s happening on the West Campus, I also had great concern for the well being of my Grandma.

Regarding my Grandma: The last week has mostly been spent at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. It’s been a good time – visiting with family and providing care to my Grandma – and we’ve had a bunch of laughs. My Grandmomma is one of my heroes, and she’s also quite a character. Despite the fact that she can barely talk now, and half of her body isn’t able to move yet, the hospital room has been full of joy, laughter, and hope.

Regarding the West Campus: These past two years have been a dream. Things haven’t been perfect, and we’ve come against many challenges, but this has been the greatest ministry experience I’ve ever been a part of. Despite the fact that this congregation didn’t grow like we all hoped it would, we’ve all been changed. I’ll never see ministry, church, fellowship, and discipleship the same again.

I couldn’t be more proud of the West Campus congregation. People have served with faithfulness and excellence, and they’ve put their hearts into this, letting it all be an act of worship. What a privilege it has been to pastor and lead this congregation!

Ceramic Tile

Jul 19, 2008

Just a couple of days after completing the floor in the dining room, we once again had a water run out from the shower and onto the carpet of the bathroom and closet. Bolstered from the confidence of replacing the floor in the dining room, I decided to lay ceramic tile.

Here are some photos of the work in progress as well as the finished project. As you can see, I had a great little helper.

New Dining Room Floor

My parents were in town a few weekends ago, and they helped me to do a spur-of-the-moment renovation of our dining room. We ripped up the carpet and put down wood laminate in its place.

The Most Dangerous Prayer

Apr 10, 2008

I desire authenticity in my life, and I tend to be pretty transparent, but I hesitate to post this because it is so raw and real in my life right now. It is a post from LifeChurch’s Swerve Blog:

Do you truly want to make a difference in this world? Do you want generations to be different because you knew Christ? Do you want to lead a church that will impact your city, state, and the world? Do you want your preaching to awaken dormant spirits, stir complacent hearts, convict wayward sinners?

Then pray this prayer: “God, please break me.”

He will.

And when He does, you’ll be ruined-in the best sort of way.

  • Your heart will ache for those without Christ.
  • You’ll despise spiritual complacency.
  • You’ll see the darkness of your heart clearly.
  • You’ll be bothered deeply by things you used to easily overlook.
  • You’ll cry often and easily.
  • You’ll know Jesus more intimately.

“Break us… Oh, Lord! Break us!”
